Welcome back. I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing spring break.
I will schedule Zoom calls for the class at 10 am every Monday and Friday. I will post the information on Google Classroom.
I wanted to clarify how much work your child should be doing each day/week for schoolwork. It is recommended that 5th grade students be given two hours of work a day, or ten hours each week. If your child is not able to complete the assignments during the week, please let me know. If you would like more schoolwork to do, look at the enrichment page of my website.
Here is a breakdown of what I have assigned this week. All assignments can be found in Google Classroom.
Math - We have our third benchmark this week. We are tracking how well students are learning at home so we can be prepared next school year. Please do not let your child stress about this test. It may take longer than 30 minutes, so you can break the test up into sections and test on different days if needed. The student's score will not be put in the gradebook.
Monday - Chapter 7 Review (Zoom optional)
Tuesday - Chapter 8 Review (Zoom optional)
Wednesday - Chapter 9 Review (Zoom optional)
Thursday and Friday - Take Benchmark #3 Test
Science/History/Typing
Monday - Lesson 1 climate video and episode questions
Tuesday - Civil War Nearpod
Wednesday - Lesson 1 Climate quiz (graded)
Thursday - Slavery Nearpod
Friday - Typing
Language ArtsMonday - Read Theory and Quill for 30 minutes
Tuesday - Weslandia Form and Vocabulary practice
Wednesday - The Changing Room Essay (graded) and vocabulary practice
Thursday - Weekly Book Share, finish essay, practice vocabulary

I will update grades most days from 2-3 pm. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I will post this information on the website.

Good morning!
Sorry for the late email. I had trouble creating my weekly video this morning. This week should be familiar with the students. We will be doing what we would do if we were in school. Everything is due Friday, so there is flexibility in how much school work they need to do each day.
Please submit all work through Google Classroom. Last week, I told the students they could share their work with me and it did not work out. The students submit their science through Google Classroom, so they should all be familiar with how to do it.
I will put the answers to the math pages on the blog later today. It will be under the Online Learning title.
If your child needs one on one help, I can conference with them online, talk on the phone, or email. Please let me know what support you need. Have a good week and contact me if you have any questions.

Good Morning,
I have finished grading everything that will go on Term 3 grades. If your child is not happy with their grade, there are a few things they can do.
Homeroom: They can complete a CNN10 make-up form to make up any missing CNN10 assignments. Those forms can be found on google classroom or by following this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/10k4DKQ2ct2ANZva_KJx6O1LsQ85m3sglxzhnfn3C0ZA/edit
Math: Complete the Drone Project in Google Classroom and submit; do more ALEKS topics for extra credit
Language Arts: writing - work in Utah Compose to raise scores; grammar - after completing the diagnostic assessment, I will give you one extra credit point for each quill assignment completed at a proficiency level (green); reading - I will give you one extra credit point for each ReadTheory quiz you take and complete at pretest level (green) or above.
If you need help logging into anything or have any questions, please let me know.

Dear Parents,
I hope to find everyone well and in good spirits. I am sure you are curious about how all of this on-line learning will be set up. This may be a long email, but I will put it on my website in case you need to reference it at a later date. It is definitely a learning curve for all of us! I have tried my best to keep assignments and routines as normal as possible, but I am sure there will be a mistake here or there. Please be patient with me as we all move into uncharted territory with this new on-line learning opportunity.

Welcome back. I hope everyone had a good weekend. We will not have new vocabulary words this week. Instead, we will focus on retaking assessments with low scores, turning in any missing work, and writing. I should have time to grade all assignments that were turned in last week after school. All retakes and missing work are due by 3/20. The end of the term is 3/25.
I hope everyone has been reading for Battle of the Books. We have some serious competition in the other classes. Everyone needs to participate. Contact me if you have any questions about the program.
Have a great week.

Please be patient with me as we all move into uncharted territory with this new on-line learning opportunity.
- Our class website is going to be your home base for information. You can access it at http://mrstannerclass.weebly.com/. Here, you can expect to find: a daily note from me (this may include a video), a 2 week checklist under the “On-Line Learning” button at the top, websites we use regularly, as well as log-ins. Please help me by monitoring your child's online access. During school hours I use a website to check what is being viewed. I have checked the websites I am linking in my lesson plans, but be present in case I missed something (more information in links for Battle of the Books in the next bullet point).
- I do not have any paperwork to send home, but if your child wants to take home a Battle of the Books novel from my classroom or their reading packet, I will be available on Wednesday. I will send home a PDF of the form the student's fill out once they have read a book. There are several online resources in the form of a PDF or audiobook that the students can read or listen to.
- If pick-up of materials to complete assignments is necessary, students will pick up materials at their individual classroom locations. Pick-up schedule will be organized alphabetically by last name as follows:
A-BIR: 8:00-8:20;
BIS-CARO: 8:20-8:40;
CARR-DOW: 8:40-9:00;
DOX-GON: 9:00-9:20;

TRE-WID: 11:40-12:00;
WIG-Z: 12:00-12:20.
The campus will be closed Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
- Students need to be diligent in keeping up as we reach the end of third-quarter. All students and parents should realize that this online portion will be figured into their end of quarter grades.
- Because your student will be doing their school online at home, below is a possible breakdown of times you could spend doing schoolwork. These times will seem shorter than being in the classroom because there is only 1 of them instead of 27 and I have not added any breaks, specials, etc. I understand that family schedules have been rearranged and set up to work within your own family, so I have tried to be flexible in due dates. I will also attach the schedule that works for my family so you can see how many options there are.

- Please keep in touch with me! Your child has a daily Google Form Assignment to fill out each day to let me know how things went for them that day. But, parents, please let me know if there are any hiccups with anything. I certainly do not want to cause extra worry, stress or frustration, but also see the importance of continued learning and a routine each day.
- I will be available by email from 8:30-3:00. We have been asked to check our email hourly. Please be patient while waiting for a reply, I may be answering several students. I will assist in any way that I can from home.
- Mrs. Jones, our school counselor, has created a webpage with resources and lessons on it. You can access it at https://sites.google.com/earlylightacademy.org/counselingcorner/home . If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Jones directly at [email protected].
- Provisions will be made for students and families who do not have access to the necessary hardware at home needed to access digital resources. Computer check out will be in the library during your assigned time listed above on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Please see Jenn Jellum in the Library for paperwork and devices.
- In addition, Comcast announced Thursday it will be making the Internet Essentials program free to new low-income customers for two months. For more information please go to the following link: https://www.wxyz.com/news/national/coronavirus/comcast-offering-internet-essentials-package-free-for-60-months-during-coronavirus-outbreak
- If you do not know how to log in to Aspire, someone will be available during your assigned time listed above on Wednesday, March 18th to assist you. My login information can be found on my website.
- If you have personal medication in the office that you require for the next two weeks, someone will be available during your assigned time listed above on Wednesday, March 18th to assist you.
- During this process, some instructions, General Education and Special Education, may be provided by “Zoom” conferencing. If you DO NOT want your student to participate in a group ZOOM instruction meeting and choose to “opt-out” of this instruction option, please let School Administration know in writing via email. I may use ZOOM to work one-on-one or in small groups if needed. We can determine that as students complete lessons at home.
- Meal Service will begin Wednesday, March 18th. Breakfast will be served from 8:45-9:45 a.m. Lunch service will be from 10:30-12 noon. All meal service will be located outside of the Cafeteria (Building C) in a Grab N Go style for curbside pickup. Students will need to provide their Name and/or Student ID number when picking up a meal. Student accounts will be charged their normal fee. Students from any of the following schools can stop by to pick up a meal: Ascent, Early Light, Spectrum, Wallace Stegner. If it is more convenient, you may go to one of the other schools mentioned to pick up your meal. Please have student names and ID ready to expedite the process. Students must be present to receive the meal(s). Please reference the Parent Smore for a detailed map of the drive thru process.
Let’s work together to make this a positive experience! I will keep you informed of information, updates and any changes as I know of them. Thank you for your understanding, patience and support!

Good Evening,
Today we began Battle of the Books. Each student brought home a flyer with the details and list of books. I will have a limited number of copies in my classroom, and they cannot be checked out, but students are welcome to read them in class. You can find many of these books in the public library, or for sale cheaply online. We will have 30 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to read and meet with teams. Student's will earn a pin for each book they read and if they read 5, they will earn a free dress wrist band. We will begin the Battle in May, May the best team win!
We do not have school on Monday, March 9th, or Monday, March 23rd. The end of the term is March 25th. All work for term 3 needs to be turned in by the 20th. Now is a good time to check grades. Most assignments have been graded and can be found in Aspire. If you are concerned about a grade, including low test scores, please contact me.
The calendar is up to date with the current checklist, vocabulary list and monthly view.
Have a wonderful evening.

We will have a party on Friday. Students are welcome to bring a valentine to share with the class, but please bring enough for every student. We have 27 students in our class. Students can bring in a box to collect valentines, or they can use a paper bag. Please do not send in food items, students will not be allowed to pass out candy or edible treats. Let me know if you have any questions about Valentine cards.
Here is a message from our room parents about Friday's activities.
Hi Parents!
We are so excited to have a Parisian themed Valentine's Day party! We will serve a light brunch as a part of our celebration (please make sure your kids still eat before school!). Every student should bring their own valentine box along with their Valentines cards to pass out.
Please sign up to bring in items or to help with the party, remember every $10 you spend counts as 1 hour of volunteer time.

Thank you,

Good morning,
I wanted to start by thanking everyone that helped with our class party. The students had a wonderful time and it turned out to be a great party. Thank you for volunteering and donating so quickly. I greatly appreciate it. I also wanted to thank you for the Christmas gifts. I gave most of the students a thank you note, but I missed a few. Thank you for your generosity and support.
Our classes Ukulele Informance will be this Thursday. I have included a picture with information about location and time.
Student Led Conferences are next week. This conference will be led by your student. I will be available to answer questions. If you would like to meet with me privately, please email me and we can schedule a time to do that.
We will not be going to the capitol on February 12th, but we will be going to the symphony on Tuesday, February 25th. Permission slips will be emailed home in February.
Let me know if you have any questions about what is happening in class.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tanner
